The Inspiration Behind Sunflower Serenade

Warmest greetings from Anisha, owner and designer here at Saffron Marigold. I invite you to journey behind the scenes with me to get a closer look at Sunflower Serenade.

The Main Print

During the summer, there is a sunflower field I regularly stroll past in my neighborhood. There’s something incredibly uplifting about the way sunflowers turn their golden faces toward the sun, radiating positivity and warmth. I find myself drawn to the raw, untamed quality and vitality that sunflowers exude. A whole field of them becomes a visual infusion of sun-kissed optimism.

Hovering above this sea of gold, countless bees hum, diligently carrying out their crucial role in pollination, symbolizing the intricate web of life.

The main print in Sunflower Serenade captures this snapshot of nature and the raw, vibrant energy and beauty it radiates.

The Complementary Print and Border Element

The complementary print and border is inspired by the sunflower’s leaves and stems, which twist and turn like nature’s calligraphy, forming a verdant tapestry that whispers tales of the earth and sun.

Designing the border and complementary elements that were inspired by the sunflowers’ leaves and stems required considerable creative effort.

Our field of sunflowers is embraced by an elegant foliage pattern featuring a botanical stripe and a petite chevron motif. This delicate border acts as a beautiful contrast against the organic charm of the main sunflower print.

The Block Printing Process

The cornerstone of any woodblock printed collection is the meticulous carving of the outline block, along with the many ancillary blocks needed to bring the design to life.

Capturing the raw, untamed essence of sunflowers and the dynamic interaction between bees and sunflowers in print form was challenging. Additionally, achieving the right scale for all elements and ensuring that every color in our palette harmonized perfectly added to the complexity of the design process.

For the Sunflower Serenade collection, 20 intricately carved woodblocks were required to print the main motifs, borders, and complementary elements.

Our Sunflower Serenade collection is inspired by the beautiful interaction between sunflowers and their diligent pollinator, the bee. With this snapshot in mind, my aim was to capture nature’s vibrant energy and beauty.

Style with substance and soul—our Sunflower Serenade collection is made by hand in collaboration with skilled artisans. The sunflower print is first hand-drawn, stenciled onto wooden blocks, carved, then printed by hand on fabric. Each linen is a work of art distinguished by the hand of the artisan, dye lot, and even weather during production.
